This week's post is dedicated to a lovely tribe member's request for inspiration - a retreat for her 2 teenage girls… Ive had fun with this & created a few storyboards so will split over the next couple of weeks. Although the storyboards have been created with a teen girl retreat in mind - the ideas apply for any teenage space - bedroom, games room etc & for girls or guys.
When I think of a 'teen dream space' I think of personality & expression - it's the age where we want to express our unique style at every chance we get.
So I say embrace this and if they are interested, really get them involved...
Your teen could create their own mood board from magazine cut-outs or an online Pinterest board - What kind of feel do they want? fun, peaceful? Is there a particular colour they want to incorporate?
Decide with them what the space will be used for? Just a hang-out zone, a homework spot, will there be a tv/video game set-up? a place to practice an instrument or get creative? does it need storage?
Obviously you will have control when it comes to budget and spending - will it be a shoe-string makeover or will you want to make a few key purchases?
Teen space essential 1 - Loungy seating options…

At home if a teen is not eating or doing homework you will likely find them lounging somewhere - with their laptop, a book, on the phone, listening to music, watching tv, playing video games or just hanging out with mates... So they will need comfy space for this highly important, essential activity...
A rug on the floor makes a great base
Machine washable large floor cushions or pouffes that can be stacked when not in use and scattered around when mates come to visit are great.
A few throw quilts add another cosy surface to lay out on or to curl under for reading or movie nights.
Some sort of loungy seating, not too precious that you need to worry about spillages or dirty shoes - It might be an old sofa you have upgraded from, or a hand-me-down from a relative or friend - lay blankets over to give it some colour & style. I love the idea of a couple of wooden pallets, perhaps with a light sand, either left raw or painted with a foam mattress laid on top - not only looks cool it will cost next to nothing and double as an extra bed for sleepovers.
I will share more ideas for teen spaces next week, in the meantime you can find the dedicated pinterest board here.
