How to create beautiful teen friendly spaces + more unmade beds…

June 24th, 2014

Here is part 2 of my 'interior teenspiration'... more ideas for cool teen spaces...

PRACTICALITIES...

Depending on how much room you have and what the space will be used for, you will most likely want some form of storage;

  • Hooks on the wall help to keep things tidy and provide a place to hang school bags, coats - esp. handy when mates come to visit. (I love the DIY wooden wall hooks in pic 1 above - link is below)
  •  Some sort of shelving unit is a good idea for books, magazines and 'bits & pieces'
  • A desk area will come in handy for surfing the web, homework or art/crafts.

PIN-UP DAYDREAM BOARD...

I'm not a fan of the 'entire wall plastered with posters look', a much more attractive & wall paint friendly option is a couple of large cork pin up boards (I paint mine white for a cleaner look) hung on the wall or propped on a desk - your teens can use these to create their very own evolving curated gallery of momentos, photos, magazine tear-outs or their own created craft or artworks.

How to create the ultimate teen dream space…

June 23rd, 2014

This week's post is dedicated to a lovely tribe member's request for inspiration - a retreat for her 2 teenage girls… Ive had fun with this & created a few storyboards so will split over the next couple of weeks. Although the storyboards have been created with a teen girl retreat in mind - the ideas apply for any teenage space - bedroom, games room etc & for girls or guys.

When I think of a 'teen dream space' I think of personality & expression - it's the age where we want to express our unique style at every chance we get.

So I say embrace this and if they are interested, really get them involved...

Your teen could create their own mood board from magazine cut-outs or an online Pinterest board - What kind of feel do they want? fun, peaceful? Is there a particular colour they want to incorporate? Decide with them what the space will be used for? Just a hang-out zone, a homework spot, will there be a tv/video game set-up? a place to practice an instrument or get creative? does it need storage? Obviously you will have control when it comes to budget and spending - will it be a shoe-string makeover or will you want to make a few key purchases?

Teen space essential 1 - Loungy seating options…

Above Images; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

At home if a teen is not eating or doing homework you will likely find them lounging somewhere - with their laptop, a book, on the phone, listening to music, watching tv, playing video games or just hanging out with mates... So they will need comfy space for this highly important, essential activity...

A rug on the floor makes a great base Machine washable large floor cushions or pouffes that can be stacked when not in use and scattered around when mates come to visit are great. A few throw quilts add another cosy surface to lay out on or to curl under for reading or movie nights. Some sort of loungy seating, not too precious that you need to worry about spillages or dirty shoes - It might be an old sofa you have upgraded from, or a hand-me-down from a relative or friend - lay blankets over to give it some colour & style. I love the idea of a couple of wooden pallets, perhaps with a light sand, either left raw or painted with a foam mattress laid on top - not only looks cool it will cost next to nothing and double as an extra bed for sleepovers. I will share more ideas for teen spaces next week, in the meantime you can find the dedicated pinterest board here.

Our most limited edition kantha quilt collection for a serene & dreamy bedroom…

June 20th, 2014

You know those effortlessly chic spaces, where you can't put your finger on any one thing, but there is an overall sense of simple, understated, elegance that draws you to it? Often the most beautiful spaces are all about simplicity & texture, they don't shout loudly, they let a few special pieces to tell the story & create the mood...

This week I am sharing with you our gorgeous new quilt collection created in collaboration with an NGO organisation I discovered while on travels through India.

If you are chasing that understated, serene feeling in your bedroom these quilts are for you; They are a gorgeous weight, not too heavy - a cosy, breathable layer over your doona in winter, or layer over sheets in summer when it's too hot for heavy blankets.

These quilts have a beautiful story, they are hand made by this group of women in a village in West Bengal, India where the tradition of Kantha stitching is passed along to each generation. This project harnesses their amazing skills to generate economic & social empowerment, it unites women & connects them to a school that seeks to educate them & their children.

It has taken around 3 months to design & produce this small collection, each piece is made from 3 layers of cotton which are intricately hand stitched together. One side has a stunning geometric embroidered pattern, the reverse side is in a neutral colour with plain stitching so you can create different looks flipping or half folding the quilt over to change things up.

Named after the women embroiderers, each piece is one of a kind, a piece you will enjoy every day and treasure forever.

Quilt size - 225cm x 275cm (will fully cover a king or queen bed)

Check out the collection in store now, If you have any questions if you would like more info don't hesitate to contact us.

The beauty of an unmade bed…

June 10th, 2014

There is something so alluring about an unmade bed don't you think? … Perhaps because it's a reminder of that dreamy, half awake stage of the morning - getting ready and using every ounce of willpower not to climb back in, or maybe it takes our minds to lazy Sunday mornings when we get the luxury of lingering in bed a little longer? Over on Instagram I've been having fun capturing our vintage kantha quilts in all their 'unmade glory' - I shot all of the below in the same space and it's amazing how just by simply switching up the quilt you get a completely new style & feeling for the room...

Our Ikat kantha quilt is one of those wonderful 'easy' pieces, they seem to work with any style and you can use them to instantly update a tired looking bedroom. They add texture & pattern making your bedroom cosy & inviting, not to mention the added layer of warmth on a chilly winter's night.

Rest in peace Maya Angelou, a woman who brought such joy & wisdom to the world.
