A peek at our little man’s nursery design…

Firstly, a quick mention that we have had such a great reaction to the release of our new summer collection (if you missed the new campaign in last week's newsletter you can find it here). We are now running very low in stock on almost all bar cart styles - just a heads up in case you are wanting Roy, Terrance or Harvey to help you celebrate the silly season! ;)

If you follow Bowerhouse on Instagram you might already know I am pregnant with my 1st - having entered into this new, strange & wonderful world, I may be clueless when it comes to swaddling, sleep routines & travel systems but I have LOVED designing a dreamy nursery for our little man & thought I might share the design journey with you today...

The starting point was this gorgeous vintage kantha quilt that somehow found it’s way into the linen closet ;) Red with a subtle white print, blue stitching & soft cream/grey check reverse.

Although the quilt provides a bright burst of colour, overall I wanted a soft, calming space so have decided on keeping the walls white & layering a few shades of blue with cream & touches of natural wood for warmth. Below is my storyboard with inspiration images for the room...

I didn't want to go too themed & didn’t want anything overly 'babyish' in the space, so although there are many irresistibly cute baby mobiles & cushions around, I wanted pieces that would grow with our little man, artwork that wouldn’t look out of place in an 8yr old's room or pieces like the wallhanging, armchair & 'eye eye' art print that could be swapped out to a living space when his room gets updated down the track. Even though we know we are having a boy, like clothing purchases, I am trying to stay fairly gender neutral so key pieces can be used again if we have a girl in the future. This week I am thrilled to share a peek from our latest summer campaign shoot with a few sneaky iPhone shots I managed to capture on the day...

We were transported to paradise with our stunning location the home of landscape design extraordinaire Mon Palmer of Slightly Garden Obsessed.

This will likely be our last kantha collection before the holiday season, we have searched far & wide for the amazing pattern & coloured textiles - each piece is one of a kind & once sold cannot be reordered.

Dimensions - Each piece varies, generally all will fully cover a single bed or lay horizontally to cover a double or queen bed (the quilt will cover the bed width-ways and the bottom 2/3 of the bed lengthways)

My guide to gorgeous concrete floors…

In recent years, concrete has become such a popular flooring option, there are now so many colours, effects & finishes available that there is a concrete floor to suit every home & interior style. We chose concrete for our current home & love it's beauty & practicality, I thought I would share a selection of gorgeous concrete floors & some tips to keep in mind when deciding if concrete is right for you...

In a new build, the concrete material for the slab can be chosen with polished concrete floors in mind, care must then be taken throughout the build to protect the slab from damage & towards the end of the build it is cut, polished & sealed to reveal the finished surface. To install concrete floors in an older property an existing slab can be polished, or an extra layer of concrete can be laid over the existing slab & then polished back.

Concrete floors are very durable, easy to mop clean & if desired can be re-buffed every 5 years or so to restore shine.

One thing to keep in mind is that concrete floors can be cold, this has been a problem for us in our current home & for our next build we would not consider concrete without underfloor heating. (If you live in a tropical climate or your home gets plenty of radiant heat from windows the cold may not be an issue)

The colour & finish options for concrete are endless, it can be dyed, acid washed, left in a raw state for a more natural look or aggregate can be added for colour & interest. Different states have specialist concrete suppliers, but a few of the big names to check out are Boral, Hanson & Holcim, these guys have showrooms with their colour & finish options on display.

In our current home (a new build) we went with an aggregate concrete from Holcim ‘Eucalyptus' - a creamy white colour with pale flecks of aggregate in browns & greys - a lovely neutral look that works with any interior colour scheme. We were also able to continue the same concrete to our outdoor alfresco, we gave the outdoor areas a smooth ‘honed’ finish, continuing the same material outdoors gave us that seamless transition between indoor & out so that when the big sliding doors are opened up, this open plan space merges into one big entertaining zone.
